Transfer to UAF

Bring your spirit of adventure.
At the ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø, transferring the credits you've already earned is quick and easy.
How will your credits transfer?
Use the Transfer Credit Estimator to see how your previous coursework will apply to your new degree at UAF.

Transfer to UAF today!

UAF accepts all transfer credit that has been earned through all regionally-accredited colleges and universities, military educational experiences, approved National exams (CLEP, AP, IB, DSST/DANTES) and credit for certificates. When possible, your transfer credit is equated with UAF courses and all other classes will transfer as elective credits. If you're transferring from a quarter system, your credits will be converted to semester credits. UAF also works with several partner schools to offer pathways from two-year colleges into the programs we offer.

Estimate how your credits will transfer

Use UAF's Transfer Credit Estimator to estimate how your credits will transfer in. This tool is the quickest and most effective way to estimate how your hard-earned credit will be accepted at UAF.

Meet with an Admissions Counselor

We're here to answer all your questions and help make the process of transferring credits from your previous colleges as quick and easy as possible.

Apply for Admission to UAF

On the apply page, you’ll be prompted to create a new student account (or sign into the application portal) and choose your degree type and major. If you have questions as you apply, let us know! We can help at any step. Call or text 907-474-7500 or email uaf-admissions@alaska.edu for assistance.

To avoid late fees, apply by the application deadlines: June 15 for the upcoming fall semester and Dec. 1 for the upcoming spring semester.

You'll be asked to attach your unofficial transcripts and any test scores you've earned. If you don't have them ready when you apply — that's okay! You can send them to us later. See step #4 below for more details.

As of December 6, 2023, UAF will not require ACT/SAT test scores for admission to any undergraduate degree program. Test scores will not be taken into consideration for UAF scholarships but a qualifying score is required for some non-UAF scholarship opportunities, such as the Alaska Performance Scholarship (APS). In some cases, test scores may be used in lieu of placement tests for registration or class prerequisites, however alternative options are available to all students.

Send Transcripts

To have your transfer credit officially evaluated, you'll need to send all transcripts to the Office of Admissions. This includes any college credit earned at a previous institution, credit for exams and military experience credit. Official transcripts can be emailed to uaf-admissions@alaska.edu or mailed to:

 ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø
 Office of Admissions
 P.O. Box 757480
 ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø AK 99775-7480

If you've completed less than 30 credits, please send your official high school transcript in addition to your college transcripts.

UAF accepts military experience credit from all military branches. Learn how to request official military transcripts.

To be considered official, transcripts must be sent directly to UAF from the issuing college or university. Most universities use a transcript service for this, but if you have any questions, let us know!

File the FAFSA

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will determine your eligibility for federal grants and loans, state grants and scholarships and some private scholarships. The FAFSA should be submitted every year. There isn't a deadline for the FAFSA, but we recommend completing it before Feb. 15 to be considered for all UAF scholarships. The state of Alaska requires the FAFSA by June 30 for state aid.

Review your Official Evaluation

After you've been admitted to UAF and your official transcripts have been received, we'll complete an official evaluation of your transfer credits. When the evaluation is complete, you'll receive an email with specific instructions on how to view your Transfer Credit Equivalency Report.

While the transfer credit team works diligently to evaluate your credits accurately, sometimes the information available to us is limited and may result in your classes transferring differently than you expected. If this is the case, we're happy to work with you! Submit an appeal and we'll re-evaluate your hard-earned credits.

Did your credits not transfer as you expected?

While the transfer credit team works diligently to evaluate your credits accurately, sometimes the information available to us is limited and may result in your classes transferring differently than you expected. If this is the case, we're happy to work with you! Submit an appeal and we'll re-evaluate your hard-earned credits.

Transferring Credits from Exams

UAF accepts credit for all exams offered through the following programs: Advanced Placement (AP), College Level Examination Program (CLEP), International Baccalaureate (IB), Credit for Language Testing and DSST/DANTES. If you've taken an exam through another testing service, you may still receive credit for the exam if it's approved by the department in which the test subject falls under.

Credit will be granted for all CLEP exams that receive a score of 50 or higher for all exams except for Foreign Languages. Foreign Language exams must meet the following scores to earn credit: French semester I and II minimum 50, semesters III and IV minimum 59; German semester I minimum 39, semester II minimum 50, semester III minimum 55, semester IV minimum 60; Spanish semester I minimum 39, semester II minimum 50, semester III minimum 57, semester IV minimum 63.

It is important to note that the CLEP General Studies exams differ from the specific study exams. General Studies exams are subject to credit limitations and will be granted based on the total number of credits that you currently have in a given discipline. Students who have previously earned less than 6 credits within a discipline (or 3 credits for mathematics), from any source, will be awarded the difference in credits upon successful completion of the exam. Students who already have 6 or more credits in the discipline (or 3 credits for mathematics) will not receive credit for the exam.

Credit will be granted for all AP exams that receive a score of 3 or higher, with the exception of Calculus AB and BC needing a score of 4 or higher.

DANTES Standardized Subject Tests (DSST) is a national program that offers exams in traditional academic, vocational/technical and business subject areas. Credit will be granted for all DSST exams that receive a score of 400 or higher.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program is a two-year curriculum for students ages 16 to 19 and is similar to the final year of secondary school in some countries in Europe. UAF grants advanced credit, with a waiver of fees, for any IB exams with a score of 4 or higher, or a score of 5 or higher for mathematics. To receive IB credit, students should submit an official copy of their IB exam results to the Office of Admissions.

Transferring Credits from Certificates

Do you have a certificate or credential that's specific to your industry? You might be able to apply that toward credit at UAF!

Students can receive non-traditional credit through the Certified Learning Credit process. If you've been awarded government or professional certificates that have been reviewed and approved by our faculty, it can be equated to one or more credits in that field.

If you've earned a certificate...

that has been added to the "Approved Certified Learning Credit", you can complete this form to have your certified learning credit added to your UAF record. Please remember to attach a copy of your certificate while submitting the form.

that has not yet been added to the "Approved Certified Learning Credit", you can request a faculty approval for your completed certificate. Please work with your advisor to have the form completed and submitted to the appropriate faculty members.

What is a GER?

General education requirements are the required courses that UAF students must complete outside of their major and minor requirements.

This table describes how courses can transfer to meet UAF GER. In addition to the descriptions on this table, any course that met the GER or Core requirements at your prior institution, will transfer to UAF as a GER course.

Transfer of credit for courses in a natural science other than those listed requires approval of the dean of the College of Natural Science and Mathematics.

GER Waivers

UAF grants general education requirements (GER) waivers through the following options:

  • If you have previously earned any bachelor's degree, or an Associate of Arts, Associate of Science or Associate of General Studies from a regionally accredited institution.
  • If you have previously earned an Associate of Applied Science degree with a transfer designation and completed at least 26 GER credits as required for that degree.
  • If you have previously completed all GER or Core requirements at your prior institution.

If you believe you qualify for a GER waiver, fill out the GER Waiver Form to request a GER waiver be added to your record.

UAF partners with colleges across the country to create easier pathways for students to transfer to UAF.
