The Health, Safety and Security Building was built in 1973. It houses the UAF Police Department and its Emergency Communications Center. The building also houses the UAF Student Health and Counseling Center.
The UAF Police Department has a staff of fully commissioned police officers trained through the state police academy. The department also hires student public safety officers.
The UAF Student Health and Counseling Center provides medical services, counseling, health education and assistance with student health insurance.
From 2001 to 2022, the Health, Safety and Security Building was considered part of the adjacent Whitaker Building, which was built in 1964 and houses the fire department. A reassessment by UAF facilities managers in 2022 concluded that the buildings should retain distinct names.
