Mr. James Brashear
Professor of Art, Emeritus
WHEREAS Mr. James Brashear has served the ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø with distinction in teaching, research and service from 1992 to 1995 and from 1997 to 2024; and
WHEREAS Mr. Brashear has been an excellent teacher, using creative and innovative methods in ceramics that have attracted great interest from students, many of whom he advised and led toward graduate degrees; and
WHEREAS Mr. Brashear’s efforts resulted in the creation of an outdoor kiln at UAF’s ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø Experiment Farm, and the facility is now one of the top research sites in the U.S. for exploring historical applications and alternative fuels; and he has been a prolific producer of ceramic pieces that have been exhibited at venues locally, nationally and internationally; and
WHEREAS Mr. Brashear has hosted dozens of visiting presenters, advised the Student Ceramic Arts Guild, maintained all ceramics production equipment, served on numerous committees, and volunteered at and donated to multiple community organizations, including coordination of the annual Empty Bowls Project to raise money for the ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø Community Food Bank;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø expresses its deep appreciation to Mr. James Brashear for his extensive contributions to the state of Alaska and to the university; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Mr. Brashear and as evidence of the university’s desire that his identification with the university be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Mr. James Brashear as professor of art, emeritus; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the chancellor of the ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Mr. James Brashear, and conveyed to Mr. Brashear on this third day of May, 2024.
