Week 4!
Week 4, already! Can you believe it!? Time is flying and you are doing great. Congratulations!
Welcome to the bright sunshine of February. The improved angle of the sun and the
extended hours of daylight are nothing short of transformative. It took some endurance
to get through December and January, but the other side is (comparatively) all sunshine
and warmth!
UAF is all about transformative experiences. In fact, a whole bunch of UAF faculty,
staff, and students developed a statement to capture our institutional vision. We settled on “Excellence through transformative experiences.â€
There are lots of different kinds of transformative experiences. Our student-athletes
travel across the country, compete at the highest levels, and then pop back to ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø,
carrying the work of their classes all the while. This takes amazing endurance and
determination and life lessons are learned associated with teamwork, leadership and
skills development. Other students are involved in amazing research in far-flung parts
of Alaska and the world. Others are working full-time, taking classes, and raising
a family – all at the same time. Others take amazing classes, build friendships, and
learn academic topics that will last a lifetime. What are the transformative experiences
you have had or plan on having?
Sometimes it is the experiences that are tangential to your classroom experiences
that can be the most impactful. When I was a student at UAF, I got a student job as
a research assistant with the Animal Quarters on West Ridge. There, I found a home
away from home and found a wonderful group of people that became like a second family.
I was lucky to have a great supervisor and I learned about work and how to be a part
of a working team. I had a lot of fun working an interesting job in interesting places.
However, the best part was the people I met and the relationships I made. To this
day, the people I worked with and the lessons I learned are dear to me. The student
job I got as an aside from my time at UAF ended up being nothing less than transformative.
Does any of this resonate with you? Are you seeking and finding the transformative
experiences you dreamed of?

Things to do:
You have until Feb. 15 at 11:59 p.m. to submit your application for scholarships for the 2025-2026 academic year. There are more scholarships than you can imagine
(in fact, there are over 400). Apply now!
Transformative experiences are a big deal here at UAF. I’m curious to hear about your
experiences, the experiences you would like to have, and the experiences you think
we should create! Let me know at obguthrie@alaska.edu.
