Celebration of Life for Jacques Philip
Please join the Center for Alaska Native Health Research in celebrating the life of Dr. Jacques Philip in the Regents' Great Hall of the UAF Fine Arts Complex on Nov. 6 from 4-6 p.m.
Parking fees will be waived beginning at 3:30 PM in both the Taku and Nenana parking lots on the UAF campus for the community gathering. However, shuttle services will only be available from the Nenana parking lot to the Wood Center (near the Regents’ Great Hall).
Dr. Philip was a long-time researcher with the Center for Alaska Native Health Research, and the event will honor his work in Alaska Native communities, and his lasting impact on our own community.
He enjoyed a fruitful career at UAF, joining CANHR in 2008 as the biomedical informatics lead, developing and managing CANHR’s participant database. In 2019 he became a research assistant professor and directed the tracking and evaluation core of the American Indian/Alaska Native Clinical/Translational Research Program. Particularly interested in social determinants of health in Alaska Native communities, he developed and evaluated culturally grounded health promotion programs using the principles of community based participatory research. He focused on programs promoting youth dog mushing including the Frank Attla Youth and Sled-Dog Care-Mushing Program. His most recent career achievements at CANHR involved the development of a new program of research exploring Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning prospects for American Indian/Alaska Native health.
Prior to joining UAF, he spent over 20 years as a competitive musher and continued to maintain a kennel in Nenana. Highlights of his mushing career include nine Iditarods and many other distance and sprint races.
Persons under the age of 18 who are attending this event should be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the duration of their time at the event per UAF policy.
This event will be in person with a virtual delivery option (please note there will not be two-way communication). For more information or questions, please contact uaf-iab-canhr@alaska.edu.
