A workshop in ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø will teach people how to lead a popular exercise program for midlife and older adults in Alaska communities.
The training is for individuals who wish to lead StrongPeople/Strong Bodies, an effective, evidence-based strength training program, in nonprofit, community settings.
Research shows that these exercises can improve bone density and muscle strength and reduce body fat and other risk factors for chronic disease. The class is designed to be offered twice weekly during an eight- to 12-week session. Leader applicants should be using weights and ideally will have some experience or training in exercise or health instruction. They should be able and willing to become CPR certified.
ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø Cooperative Extension agent Leslie Shallcross will teach the workshop.
The class is scheduled for 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Friday, April 26, in the University Park Building, Room 108, 1000 University Avenue, ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø. Register at by April 22. The cost is $225. Some waivers are available.
Lunch, water, coffee, tea, light snacks and the StrongPeople/StrongBodies program tool kit will be provided. Trainees should come prepared to exercise and also to practice instructing others in program exercises.
