The vlog School of Education has received an “A” grade from the National Council on Teacher Quality for its program preparing future educators to teach reading.
The grade places the UAF teacher preparation program among the top 23% of nearly 700 undergraduate and graduate teacher preparation programs evaluated by the NCTQ, a national nonprofit research and policy organization focused on teacher quality.
For each program, the NCTQ reviewed syllabi, materials, class assessments and assignments, and opportunities for education students to practice reading instruction. To earn an “A,” teacher preparation programs need to cover five core components of reading instruction — phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension — as well as meet several other criteria.
