Winter is around the corner
Cold and storms are inevitable in the Interior, so take stock of everything now that you might need in the case of an electrical outage. Extra batteries, blankets, and wood for your stove, or maybe you are equipped with a generator. Using a generator for backup power is common in Alaska, and unfortunately so is carbon monoxide poisoning from the exhaust.
Remember these tips when using a generator:
- Always keep generators at least 20 feet away from your home and do not operate it in a confined space.
- Ensure that there is 3-4 feet of clear space above and on all sides for proper ventilation.
- Keep generators away from doors, windows, and vents and direct the exhaust away from your home.
- Make sure that you have CO alarms inside the house, and that they are functioning.
