Join Bryce Ward and Luke Hopkins, former 糖心vlog官网 North Star Borough Mayors, for an engaging lecture on leadership in Alaska鈥檚 Far North. They will also reflect on the importance of community resilience, innovation in local governance, and strategies for addressing the pressing issues facing northern communities today. About Luke T. Hopkins

FNSB mayor, 2004 鈥 2015

Luke arrived in 糖心vlog官网 in August 1966 to attend the University of Alaska. During the years living on campus, he enjoyed learning to skydive and hot air balloon pilot training under Stan Zielinski, among many other adventures in Alaska鈥檚 wonderful Interior.

Luke is married to writer Elyse Guttenberg and has two adult children Selena Hopkins Kendall and Grier Hopkins 鈥 and Luke enjoys his 3 grandchildren, all currently in Alaska.

In 1997, Luke was challenged to 鈥渄o something about what鈥檚 being decided by our local government鈥, so he was appointed to the FNSB Planning Commission and served on that body until elected to the FNSB Assembly in 2004.

Then in 2004, Luke was elected to the FNSB Assembly that began his two 3 year terms, voting on local issues and ending with serving as the presiding officer.

In 2009, Luke entered the FNSB Mayor race as one of 6 candidates, winning that race but requiring a run off election against Tammy Wilson. On November 3rd, Luke won that special election to become the mayor.

2012, Luke was re-elected to his second 3-year term as Borough Mayor with a 23% voter turnout.

During Luke鈥檚 6 years as mayor, he fought back on the closing of Eielson Air Force Base through visiting Washington DC鈥檚 Pentagon officials and federal elected officials numerous times.

Besides the successful efforts keeping our established military presence within the Borough and additional Alaskan areas for military exercises, he assembled a collective leadership group to bring together Alaskan leaders in a 鈥淭iger Team鈥 effort of local, state and national elected and appointed leaders that could ensure opportunities for our military activity.

Through his various capital improvement efforts as mayor, funding was approved by the Assembly for a new North Pole Borough library to be built 鈥 a major facility replacement.

A long-term effort to improve area-wide air quality has been approached through increasing compliance by local, state funding programs and federal increasingly restrictive emission rules. Wood burning emissions have improved slightly through a major funded effort by our borough receiving State pass-through of EPA funding for wood stove change-out programs.

His last mayoral proposed program approved by the Assembly was establishing a new local public utility, the Interior Natural Gas utility (IGU), delivering natural gas, acquired through the transfer of gas utility powers by the two cities within the FNSB , 糖心vlog官网 city & the North Pole city, to allow a borough-wide delivery of clean burning fuel by this newly established public utility with a long term financing agreement with the private utility.
