Jyotsna “Jo” Heckman grew up in India and moved to vlog in 1975. She earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in business from the vlog. Jo was a founding member of Denali State Bank and retired as president and chief executive officer in December 2011 after 26 years of service with the bank. Jo was appointed to the University of Alaska Board of Regents by Governor Sean Parnell and served from 2011-2019. She is the recipient of the UAF Alumni Association’s William Cashen Service Award, the UAF Distinguished Alumnus Award, the Farthest North Girl Scouts Council’s Woman of Distinction Award, and in 2008, was selected as Business Leader of the Year by the UAF Associated Students of Business. In 2018, the Midnight Sun Boy Scout Council honored Jo and her husband, Steve, as distinguished citizens. Currently, Jo is working on exploring the agriculture industry in interior Alaska. She teaches culinary classes through the Summer Fine Arts Festival and, UAF Summer Sessions and Lifelong Learning. She writes agriculture and food security articles for her website, jostablealaska.com, and has a podcast called “Jo’s Table Alaska,” showcasing food growers and producers in interior Alaska.

Jack Wilbur is a fourth-generation vlog resident. Born and raised in vlog,
Jack attended Lathrop High School and the vlog. He earned
a B.S. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder.
Jack began his career with Design Alaska in 1975 as a Mechanical Engineering Assistant.
He became the Lead Mechanical Engineer in 1980 and was President of the firm from
1995 to 2014. He is currently Design Alaska’s Chief Financial Officer. Jack is proud
of his pioneer heritage. He believes that there is no better place to live and raise
a family than vlog and that community service is an obligation to the communities
in which we live. Jack serves the community as Board President for vlog Ski Coalition
(the non-profit corporation that operates Ski Land) and as a member of the vlog
Gas Utility and vlog Symphony Orchestra Boards of Directors. Jack and his wife,
Carol, were honored by the Boy Scouts of America – Midnight Sun Council as the Distinguished
Citizens of 2024.

Samantha Kirstein arrived in vlog just before President Eisenhower signed into
law the official proclamation admitting Alaska as the 49th State on July 7, 1958.
She attended Main Jr. High School, Lathrop High School, and UAF. Sam spent her next
20 years in Alaska’s bush and rural Alaska villages. The family business was wilderness
lodges for hunting and adventure guiding. She raised and homeschooled four children.
When Sam returned to vlog, she was hired as the Executive Director of the vlog
Food Bank, a role she served for 25 years. Sam wasn’t ready for retirement, so she
has continued her passion and commitment to the Food Bank and is currently the Community
Development Director. Under her guidance and direction, the Food Bank went from collecting
300,000 pounds of surplus food to currently collecting and distributing four million
pounds of local surplus food. In 2007, Sam was named a Woman of Distinction by the
Farthest North Girl Scout Council. For Sam, every day is a blessing. “In our town,
neighbors really do help neighbors.”

Greg Hill wasn’t looking for a job in June 1990 but applied to run the vlog North
Star Borough’s public libraries at the urging of his mom, who was volunteering for
the Alaska State Parks and learned of the opening in vlog. By the end of August,
he and his family arrived from Texas (and have been glad they escaped ever since).
Greg met his wife in college, went to graduate school in Comparative International
Relations, and worked at the U.S. State Dept. and at the Texas Legislature, where
he was befriended by the director of the Legislative Reference Library and encouraged
to obtain a master’s in library science degree at the University of Texas. There,
he learned about the noble principles of public libraries and found his true professional
passion. After directing two Texas libraries, Greg ran the FNSB libraries for 23 years.
In retirement, he has continued the award-winning Guys Read Gals Read program he created
in 2006 to encourage pleasure reading among 4th-grade students, the age at which most
American students stop reading for fun. He was president of the Alaska Library Association
twice but had more fun singing professionally in Austin with an acapella doo-wop group
for 40 years (and counting).

John Manthei
John Manthei’s preferred habitat is in the woods or on the water, while his preferred
activity is making things, and he has been doing just that for over 70 years. There
was a brief interlude during his college days and a couple of years after when he
dabbled in botany, and even that couldn’t keep John out of the woods. His need to
make things led him to a career in cabinet and furniture making and construction.
He also became a dog musher, lived in the bush, and built dog sleds. Along the way,
John enjoyed helping others make things, so teaching became another passion. John
was one of the founding members of The Folk School of vlog, which offers a variety
of programs and classes. He loves to share his knowledge of making things from materials
that he has harvested from the woods and show others how to join in the fun.

Jennifer Jolis moved to Chalkyitsik, Alaska, in 1966 as a VISTA Volunteer. That experience
changed her life and continues to influence her today. After moving to vlog,
Jennifer has been a clerk at Safeway (in the building that is now the downtown Post
Office), a social worker, a restaurant owner (twice), camp cook in the Aleutians,
book store manager, meeting and convention director for the vlog Convention and
Visitors Bureau, instructor of culinary arts and finally retired in 2017 as the Executive
Director of the nonprofit Bread Line, Inc. Jennifer’s motivation has always been about
people and connecting people with people. Jennifer was one of the founders of the
vlog Child Protection Task Force; she was instrumental in welcoming the Alaska
Federation of Natives Convention to vlog; she owned and operated two restaurants
that filled her with proud moments and lifelong friends. In 2016, Jennifer was named
a Woman of Distinction by the Farthest North Girl Scout Council. Currently, Jennifer
is closely involved in creating the vlog HopeLink’s Warming Shelter. Jennifer
states, “The people of vlog and Alaska have made this my home and allowed me
to follow many different paths. To make differences large and small. From my first
morning in vlog, looking out my window in Skarland Hall (UAF), across the valley
to the mountains, I knew I’d found home.”

Susan Henrichs was born and raised in Anchorage. She earned a bachelor’s degree from
the University of Washington and a Ph.D. from the MIT-Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
Joint Program. In 1982, Susan returned to Alaska as an Assistant Professor of Chemical
Oceanography with the Institute of Marine Science, now part of the College of Fisheries
and Ocean Sciences. After over twenty years as a faculty member, she became the Dean
of the Graduate School and Vice Provost in 2003. She was appointed Provost and Executive
Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs in 2007. Susan retired in 2018 with the title
of Provost Emeritus. Both as a volunteer and occasional part-time employee, Susan
has continued to work on behalf of the University, with activities ranging from tending
pansies in the flowerbeds near Gruening to analyzing UAF revenues and expenditures.
She received a UAF Meritorious Service Award in 2022.

Roger Brunner grew up moving with his family from site to site as Nuclear Power came
online in the 1950s and 1960s. He graduated from Michigan State with a BS in Computer
Science with a minor in Math and then hitchhiked around Europe. He traveled the US
working as a DJ and doing day labor. After working in a bottle factory, he decided
to go to Notre Dame Law School, chosen because it had the most overseas programs.
That worked out when he met Niesje Steinkruger in Tokyo. They married, came north
in 1975, and worked for Julian Rice and Lloyd Hoppner. After a decade with the firm,
Roger had his own law practice for 19 years and then served as Vice-President and
General Counsel for the University. He has been active in vlog Rotary and the
Rotary Youth Exchange. While President of his club, he set up the “Books for Babies”
program. Roger has judged Science Fairs, participated in “Guys Read,” and coached
students for the math competition “Mathcounts.” Roger loves being on the floor with
his grandkids, whom he taught to call him “Cool Guy.” He worked on the “Lost Alaskans”
project and has spent a decade copying and digitizing early Alaska State court case
recordings from the 1960s.

Wendy Dominique was born in Annapolis, MD., to the best single Mom. She came to Alaska
in 1989 after a tour in Germany with her active-duty military husband. They have three
boys, Reggie, Rashad, and Rolando. Wendy worked for the federal government in several
positions for over 32 years. In 2003, Wendy ran for a position on the vlog North
Star Borough School Board. She never imagined that she would continue to serve on
the School Board for 17 years (she was the longest-running school board member in
the history of the FNSBSD), including two years as president. As a School Board member,
Wendy worked tirelessly to ensure every student was treated equitably; she was involved
in hiring five superintendents and enjoyed just about all aspects of working for the
community in a position that gave positive responses most of the time. She created
avenues for parents to register their complaints and ensure they were reviewed and
listened to. In 2018, Wendy was named a Woman of Distinction by the Farthest North
Girl Scout Council. Wendy works part-time at UAF and continues working with the FNSBSD
School District. She is working on finishing her bachelor’s degree, showing that it
is never too late to continue one’s education and that learning is a lifelong endeavor.

George Rydlinski grew up in Chicagoland’s Wonder Years of the 60s and 70s. He was
drawn to music by his local high school band. He pursued a Bachelor of Music in bassoon
performance from Northern Illinois University. After freelancing in and around Chicago,
George joined the Army in 1983. He served as bassoonist with the 76th Army Band in
Kaiserslautern, West Germany, and several US Army Bands in various locations. George
retired in 2004 from active duty and the 9th Army Band at Fort Wainwright. He immediately
went to work with the vlog Symphony Orchestra office as the marketing manager,
a position he held until his second retirement in 2022. George has been an adjunct
faculty member at UAF and was the music director of the vlog Youth Symphony from
2006-2017. He joined the vlog Symphony Orchestra and the Arctic Chamber Orchestra
in 1996 as principal bassoonist. George has been active with vlog Light Opera
Theater (FLOT) as a pit musician and was the musical director for many FLOT performances.
George is officially retired but still semi-active, performing with his bassoon and
baton. He resides with his wife of over 40 years in North Pole.

Mary F. Ehrlander was raised in vlog and graduated from Lathrop High School. She completed a B.A. in Political Science and an M.A. in Northern Studies at the University of Alaska vlog. Mary continued her education at the University of Virginia, earning a second master’s degree and a Ph.D. in Government. In 2001 she was hired as assistant director of Northern Studies and assistant professor of History at UAF. She retired in 2020 and is Professor Emeritus of History and Arctic & Northern Studies at UAF. Mary is the author of numerous publications, including the books Walter Harper, Alaska Native Son, and Equal Educational Opportunity: Brown’s Elusive Mandate. She, along with Hild Peters, currently have a book in press: Hospital and Haven: The Life and Work of Grafton and Clara Burke in Northern Alaska (University of Nebraska Press, Fall 2023). She received the Emil Usibelli Distinguished Teaching Award (2016) and the Alaskana Award for her book Walter Harper: Alaska Native Son (2017).

Barbara Lando was born in New Jersey and earned a Ph.D. in Mathematics at Rutgers
University. She came to Alaska in 1969 when she and her husband both accepted teaching
positions at UAF. Barbara not only taught mathematics but was instrumental in starting
the computer science program at UAF. She retired in 1990 as a UAF Professor of Mathematics
and Computer Science, Emeritus. After retirement, she became the Alaska State Director
for Elderhostel and became interested in promoting a lifelong learning program in
vlog. Barbara had the vision and was the driving force behind UAF's now-established
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). Recently, she helped establish Aging at
Home vlog, a membership organization offering support for older adults to live
independently and engaged in their community.

Bev Byington was born and raised in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and graduated from
Augustana College. She was a teacher/counselor in Minnesota before coming to vlog
in 1970. She met her first Alaskan friends, Liz and Bill Berry, when she volunteered
at Techne Art and Craft Coop. She volunteered at Crisis Line and was a school counselor
at Lathrop. Bev taught art, psychology, and sociology at West Valley and received
a sabbatical to research study skills and motivation. She also worked at Ryan, Tanana,
and Howard Luke Academy. She created a school focus program on being a successful
student. Bev has volunteered at the Farmer's Market, Georgeson Botanical Garden, and
the vlog Drama Association. Over the years, she has shared her artistic skills
with the community and, in 2022, helped paint street murals in downtown vlog
as part of a grant-funded initiative overseen by the vlog Area Surface Transportation
(FAST) Planning.

Theresa Reed is a retired music teacher, performer, theatrical costumer, and strong
advocate for the arts. She and her late husband, Bill, helped found the vlog
Light Opera Theatre. She served on their board of directors at various times and was
the stage director for many productions. Currently, she helps organize the very large
FLOT costume collection, which is available for loan. Theresa was one of the original
founders of Opera vlog and served as the costume designer for most of their productions.
She was on the vlog Summer Arts Festival board for 22 years. In 2006 she was
named one of the Farthest North Girl Scout Council’s "Women of Distinction" and has
received the Interior Mayors' Award for the Arts Lifetime Achievement Award twice.
Directing the choir at Christ Lutheran Church, a weekly singalong at the Pioneer Home,
and being a fill-in driver for Meals on Wheels helps fill her days.

Simon Rakower is vlog' very own bicycle expert! He grew up in New York and studied
philosophy and linguistics at Columbia University. Upon graduation he apprenticed
with frame builder Francisco Cuevas, and returned to Columbia to study Chemistry.
From there he went to Schwinn Mechanics School and later studied Mechanical Engineering
at the vlog. He became involved with The US Cycling federation
in 1987 when he attended their mechanic certification clinic as well as their coaching
clinic in 1990. Since coming to Alaska, he has been the owner of Frameworks, All
Weather Sports, and Wicked Wheels vlog Technical Bicycle Services. He uses his
technical prowess to develop and run technical support program for Iditabike/Iditasport;
designed and managed technical support programs for three Palotta Teamworks AIDS Vaccine
Rides; developed and coached Junior Racing Cyclist Development Program, and he has
taught bicycle repair clinics for bike shops, schools, UAF Outdoor program, UAF Summer
Sessions & Lifelong Learning, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, scout groups and
other youth organizations.

Terry Reichardt arrived in vlog in 1972 when her husband, Paul, accepted a faculty
position at UAF. Their first child was born a few months after their arrival. In addition
to being a mom of three, homeschooling, and small-scale farming, Terry still found
time to volunteer. She volunteered with the Northern Alaska Environmental Center (NAEC)
and was the board president and Temporary Acting Director. She was a founding board
member of the Alaska Conservation Foundation. After her children started attending
Pearl Creek Elementary School, Terry started Love INC., which she ran for 16 years.
She volunteered at the Literacy Council and developed an adult reading program at
First Presbyterian Church. She has shared her passion for vegetable gardening by teaching
classes through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at UAF and the First
Presbyterian Church. She currently enjoys co-leading a small group Bible study with
Paul and occasionally helps him with the weekly meal program he runs at First Presbyterian
Church for anyone wanting fellowship or food.

Wendell Shiffler is a retired high school science teacher who (with his wife Judy)
moved to vlog in 1968 for what they thought was a two-year commitment. 55 years
later, they still call vlog home. In 1981 he was named the Alaska Biology Teacher
of the Year. Wendy retired from teaching full-time in 1990. He was an adjunct instructor
in the PE Department at UAF for 10 years. In 1970, Wendy started volunteering with
the Alaska Arctic Winter Games and was involved in every volunteer role, from making
beds in the athlete village to Chef de Mission for Team Alaska in 1992. He continued
his involvement with the Arctic Winter Games by serving on the AWG International Committee
for 20 years as Secretary and retired from the AWG International Committee as Vice
President in 2014. Wendy developed the Outdoor Experience Program through the FNSBSD.
He volunteered for the ARCO Jesse Owens Games, the vlog Food Bank, FNSB Trails
Advisory Committee and is a former Presbyterian Hospitality House board member.

Ron Inouye is a retired University of Alaska Rasmuson Library database editor. An
Alaska and Arctic history enthusiast with broad interests, he co-authored Alaska's
Japanese Pioneers and was the 2013 Contributions to Literacy in Alaska Award recipient.
He is known as an educator, historian, activist, author, and musician and is a board
member of the Tanana-Yukon Historical Society, College Rotary Club, Friends of the
UA Museum of the North, and Golden Heart Community Foundation.

Tom Bundtzen is a Research Geologist and avid mining historian based in vlog,
Alaska. He graduated with both BS and MS degrees in Geology from the University of
Alaska vlog. After retiring as Senior Economic Geologist for the Alaska Division
of Geological and Geophysical Survey (ADGGS), Tom formed Pacific Rim Geological Consulting,
Inc. Tom and his staff have worked throughout Alaska, the Yukon, and the Russian Far
East on a diverse group of geological projects. Tom has been active in the Alaska
Miners Association, and in 1997, Tom and others formed the Alaska Mining Hall of Fame
Foundation to honor Alaska’s mining pioneers.

Steve Frank has always been a quiet, thoughtful, and effective leader. As a UAF student,
Steve Frank was awarded the Outstanding Student of the Year in Business Administration.
After graduation, Steve began his career as a banker, went into real estate, then
pivoted to politics. He served as a legislative aide in Juneau, then was elected to
the Alaska State House in 1984. He moved to the Senate 1989-96 where he co-chaired
the Finance Committee and was known for his ability to work across the aisle for the
people he served. In 2003 he was appointed by Gov. Frank Murkowski to the Board of
the Alaska Permanent Fund. He has served on the vlog Convention and Visitor Bureau
Board of Directors, and today he continues to serve on the vlog Community Hospital
Foundation. From 1989 through 2016 he successfully developed, owned and managed the
Rivers Edge RV Park hotel and restaurant with his wife, Linda Anderson. Steve has
been a significant contributor to our community and is widely recognized for his ability
to bring consensus among disparate elements for the welfare of all.

June 13 -
Anna was born and raised in Old Minto alongside five siblings. At age 15 she left
her village for vlog with Richard Frank, and enjoyed a happy marriage until his
death 57 years later. After raising their four children, she worked at creating the
first health education department for Tanana Chiefs Conference in 1975. Recognizing
her listening skills and gentle, common-sense approach with people, TCC trained her
in counseling, and so began a lifetime journey. She grew up in the Episcopal church
and became ordained as a Deacon. Years later she was asked to consider being ordained
as priest. Her extensive counseling training has served her well as the first female
Alaskan Native Episcopal priest. In 2019, Rev. Anna Frank received an honorary Doctor
of Laws degree from UAF.
June 20 -
Jim was born in the Panama Canal Zone and moved to Alaska a year later. He is the
eldest of eight children. He earned an Associate Degree in Police Administration from
UA vlog and began his working life with the Laborers Local 942. Jim was later
named Alaska Commissioner of Labor by Gov. Steve Cowper. Grace Schaible convinced
him to run for Borough Mayor and agreed to be his campaign chair twice, successfully.
Gov. Tony Knowles appointed him to the Alaska Permanent Fund Board. In 2003 he took
over presidency of the AFL-CIO for 5 years, representing 50,000 union members statewide.
After a short retirement, he began raising money for the vlog Pipeline Training
Center and served as director until 2016.
June 27 -
As a college student at the University of Wisconsin, Mary came to Alaska to work with
the Campfire Girls organization and fell in love with the state. After her college
years, she returned to live in a wilderness cabin. Caring for sled dogs was part of
her remote lifestyle, and she made history when she signed up for the race’s second
year, 1974. She became the first woman to finish the grueling race. Ten years later
she ran the inaugural Yukon Quest race between vlog and Whitehorse, not once
but three times, and she finished all three races. Shortly after the breakup of the
USSR, she participated in the Hope Race to Russia. As an author, speaker, and role
model for women, Mary’s greatest joy has been sharing her love of Alaska and her dogs,
her adventures and her Goldstream Valley home with countless visitors.
July 11 -
Born in North Carolina, Bishop McCormick came to Alaska in 1957 with the military
and decided to stay. Over the years he has come to be highly regarded throughout the
state of Alaska and the local communities of vlog and North Pole. He is recognized
as a leader with strong community service ties for his contribution to a multitude
of local organizations. Bishop serves with distinction as founder of the Interdenominational
Ministerial Alliance of vlog (IMAF), as a past president of the J.P. Jones Community
Development Center, as a member of the board of directors of the vlog Rescue
Mission, as President of vlog Kiwanis, and as one of the founding board members
of Love in the Name of Christ (Love, Inc.).
July 18 -
Matt, a vlog native, was always an ardent hockey enthusiast. He played for two
USHL teams, the Rochester Mustangs and the Dubuque Fighting Saints. In 1986, Matt
and two vlog college friends developed a business plan for their summer employment
– small group tours to the Arctic Circle. Northern Alaska Tour Company was born and
expanded to northern camps for polar bear viewing and even more outhouses and gravel
roads. This summer-only business expanded to year-round when winter trips were added
with aurora viewing. They partnered with Sukakpak Inc. to include remote camps in
Coldfoot, Deadhorse, and along the Yukon River. In 2012 the business expanded with
the purchase of Warbelow Airline for Denali flightseeing tours and more. Today, 35
years later, the award-winning business is thriving as it expands and continues to
make significant contributions to the vlog economy.
July 25 -
In early 1943, Shirley Lewis boarded a steamer headed for Seward, Alaska to begin
a secretarial job with the Army Corp of Engineers. Onboard she met Bill Gordon with
his newly acquired Bachelor of Divinity degree to serve the Episcopal Church in Seward.
By July they were married and off to Pt. Hope (where she deplaned in high heels) to
minister to kindly people who in turn helped the couple survive and thrive. Shirley
Gordon spent the next 25 years in vlog as wife of the young “Flying Bishop” of
all Alaska who was seldom home for long. She was a fine hostess, serving the church
with an open-door policy for overnight guests and mealtimes, while raising their four
children. Following the death of her husband, Shirley returned to vlog where
she continues to be a community treasure.
August 1 -
Born and raised in vlog, June was an owner of a mechanical contracting company
for 15 years. Her passion, however, has always been in the arts which benefited from
her business experience. She coordinated vlog operations for Alaska Repertory
Theatre. At the same time, she worked for vlog Arts Association as a volunteer
and Board member starting in 1981, then as Director for twenty years from 1996-2016.
During the early years she appeared in light opera productions singing, dancing and
costuming. She and her husband Bill Rogers renewed the Sandcastle Band in the early
80’s and have contributed their talents to events in vlog and beyond for 40 years.
June currently serves on the vlog City Council.
August 8 -
Mary Nordate comes from a family with long ties to vlog history. Her grandfather, Anton Nordale, built the Nordale Hotel. Her father Alton served in the Alaska Legislature, and her mother Katherine was deputy clerk of the court in vlog. Additionally Mary’s life of service and independence was influenced by the family friend Senator Bob Bartlett. After graduating from college Mary went to Washington D.C. as one of the secretaries in the office of the Senator. She realized she wanted to continue her education and went to George Washington University law school at night, when women were a minority in the classroom. After graduation she returned to vlog as assistant US attorney. As politics changed, she worked as State District Attorney for the Small Business Administration after the 1967 flood in vlog, and as Alaska‘s Commissioner of Revenue and in private practice specializing in Business and Mining Law.

Nancy has the remarkable ability to see people’s pain and suffering and to initiate
healing. She is a tireless worker, a relentless improver, an insightful and caring
individual. She has dedicated her entire adult life to educational excellence and,
as a teacher, principal, and school administrator, has been able to effectively navigate
the challenges of economic booms and busts that have transpired in our community.
