UAF Career Services offers our employer partners a comprehensive range of options to engage with top UAF talent, build brand awareness on campus and implement successful recruiting strategies. By participating in any of UAF Career Services’ recruiting programs or posting positions on Handshake, you confirm that you and your organization will abide by our recruiting policies.

 

Post jobs and internships

Employers can share available job and internship opportunities with thousands of UAF students and alumni at no charge on Handshake, our job board and networking platform. For more information on how to post an open position, visit our Handshake information page.

Please reach out if you would like to be featured in our weekly job stories on Instagram and Facebook or included in our monthly newsletter to students. We have limited space, but aim to accommodate as many employers as possible. To be included we ask that you email a link to your job posting (must be on Handshake), and any other relevant information or graphics to uaf-career@alaska.edu.

Attend a career fair

UAF Career Services hosts multiple career fairs throughout the academic year. They are excellent opportunities to build your talent pipeline and recruit UAF students and alumni for a diverse range of job and internship roles. For registration access and event information on our upcoming career fairs, visit our events page.

Host a presentation

Employers can host in-person or virtual presentations. You can host an information session, where you can educate students about your company culture, current openings and industry trends. Or you can offer an educational workshop, where you can share best practices for resumes, cover letters and interviews, teach industry-specific technical skills, or provide feedback on job applications. To request a presentation, email uaf-career@alaska.edu.

Conduct on-campus interviews

Employers can request to reserve a room to interview UAF students on campus. To reserve an interview room, email uaf-career@alaska.edu. Please contact us at least two weeks in advance of when you'd like the interview room. You will receive a confirmation email when your request has been approved.

Recruiting policies

UAF Career Services has developed the following policies to facilitate an ethically sound recruiting environment for students, alumni and employers alike. By participating in any of UAF Career Services’ recruiting programs or posting positions on our job board on Handshake, you confirm that you and your company will abide by these policies and by the National Association of College and Employers’ . UAF Career Services reserves the right to change its policies at any time, with or without notice, and to make exceptions to policies as necessary on a case-by-case basis.

In accordance with the , employers recruiting UAF students and alumni are prohibited from discriminating against work-authorized candidates with respect to recruitment and/or hiring on the basis of their citizenship status, immigration status or national origin. We encourage employers to familiarize themselves with the Department of Justice’s .

Employers are expected to keep student and alumni personal information confidential. This includes information gathered in person, written documents (e.g. resumes, cover letters), and Handshake profile data. Employers may only use candidate information to fill employment vacancies within their own company or organization; sharing information about a candidate with another party without the candidate’s prior written consent is a violation of the . Employers who access the University of Alaska system’s Handshake platform must also abide by .

UAF Career Services has sole discretion to determine which professional opportunities and employers we will promote to students and alumni on the University of Alaska system’s Handshake platform. We reserve the right to decline any employer’s job posting from the university system’s Handshake platform. Additionally, we reserve the right to deny any employer’s request to connect with our Handshake platform, and to revoke a connected employer’s access to said platform at any time. Employers who are not connected to the university system’s Handshake platform cannot register for our career fairs or post jobs for our student and alumni community. UAF Career Services may decline a job posting, deny an employer Handshake connection request, or rescind an existing connection for reasons that include, but are not limited to, the following:

Non-permitted employers and industries

  • The employer’s primary business is in one of the following industries: cannabis, door-to-door sales, gambling, multi-level marketing, private residence-based service (e.g. babysitting, pet sitting, at-home tutoring) or wilderness therapy.
  • The employer is a third party recruiter or staffing firm that only recruits for positions outside the state of Alaska.
  • The employer is an international company that only recruits for positions outside the state of Alaska; exceptions are made for Canadian employers and for international volunteer programs that do not charge participants.
  • The employer is affiliated with a political entity outside the state of Alaska.
  • The employer is recruiting applicants for graduate school; exceptions are made for graduate assistantships, postdocs and research fellowships.

Non-permitted job postings

  • The employer’s job posting(s) do not clearly identify the scope and responsibilities of the position, the requirements of the position and/or compensation information.
  • The employer’s job posting(s) are not current or have been open on Handshake for more than one calendar year; if the position is still available at that time, employers should repost the job.
  • The employer’s job posting(s) require candidates to pay a fee to apply for the position, to travel to the position location and/or to obtain training or work equipment.
  • The employer’s job posting(s) offer an entirely commission-based salary; any position with commission-based compensation must have a guaranteed base salary.
  • The employer’s job posting(s) do not provide a physical address or only provide a residential, P.O. box or mail drop address; exceptions are made when employees work remotely.
  • The employer’s job posting(s) contain inaccurate, misleading or fraudulent information.
  • The employer’s job posting(s) include sexually explicit, obscene, libelous, defamatory, physically threatening or illegal content.

Non-permitted conduct

  • The employer does not adequately comply with the recruiting policies of UAF Career Services or with other applicable regulations and laws.
  • The employer has been accused of unethical treatment by students, alumni, faculty or staff, or has been flagged in Handshake for suspicious or inappropriate conduct by career services staff at other colleges and universities.
  • The employer is not registered with the Better Business Bureau or is not willing to provide proof of registration upon request.
  • The employer solicits or sells products and/or services during the recruitment process.
  • The employer uses an email with a generic domain (e.g. gmail, outlook, yahoo) rather than an email with a company-specific domain.

UAF Career Services expects employers to appropriately compensate candidates for the work they perform during an internship. Any paid internship must offer a stipend equal or greater than minimum wage in the state where the position takes place. Any unpaid internship must meet the criteria detailed in this to qualify as legitimate. If any of these criteria are not met, the intern is entitled to both minimum wage and overtime pay, in accordance with the .

UAF Career Services reserves the right to decline or delete an internship posting from the University of Alaska system’s Handshake platform if the posting fails to comply with these regulations or with any other UAF Career Services policy.

Employers who violate any of UAF Career Services’ recruiting policies or other applicable regulations and laws may be temporarily or permanently suspended from one or all of our recruiting programs, including but not limited to:

  • Job posting privileges
  • On-campus interviews
  • Early registration for career fairs
  • Participation in recruiting events (e.g. fairs, information sessions, workshops)
  • Access to the University of Alaska system’s Handshake platform

Additionally, UAF Career Services reserves the right to flag employers who have engaged in suspicious or inappropriate conduct on Handshake. These flags will be visible to career services staff at other colleges and universities.

Suspensions will be levied with or without notice at the sole discretion of UAF Career Services. To appeal a suspension, contact Director of Career Services April Jaillet at aejaillet@alaska.edu.
