Resources for persons with limited English proficiency

Individuals who do not speak English as their primary language and who have a limited ability to read, speak, write, or understand English can be limited English proficient, or "LEP." These individuals may be entitled under Title VI to language assistance with respect to a particular type of service, benefit, or encounter.

If an individual would like assistance with translators or interpreters, they must notify the staff or contact the program administrator listed on the event or class flyer or by notifying UAF Office of Rights, Compliance and Accountability for assistance via phone (907) 474-7300, by walk-in or at uaf-orca@alaska.edu. The staff member or administrator will work with the individual to assist them with resources and address their needs.

There are several resources administrators can utilize in assisting with supporting individuals with limited English Proficiency, such as digital services, glossaries, creating multilingual content, and translation services.

UAF's ADA/504 coordinator is responsible for monitoring compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and titles II and III of the Americans with Disabilities Act, accessibility rules, as well as discrimination and harassment based on disability. The 504 coordinator oversees UAF and the UA system’s prevention and education efforts; implements the institution's complaint procedures; responds to reports and complaints; conducts inquiries and investigations; identifies and addresses patterns; and assesses effects on the campus climate so UAF can address issues that affect the wider campus community. UAF's Title IX coordinator has primary responsibility for coordinating efforts to comply with and carry out UA's responsibilities under Title IX, which prohibits sex- and gender-based discrimination in all the operations of UA, as well as retaliation for the purpose of interfering with any right or privilege secured by Title IX.
