Bakker named development, alumni relations director

Theresa Bakker has been named UAF's director of development and alumni relations. In the position, she will oversee fundraising, donor relations and alumni relations at UAF. Her appointment also formally merges the development team and the alumni team into a single department, a model that aims to facilitate a unified approach to the university's engagement with its donors and alumni.

Winter gear drive for the UAF FreeStore

The Office of Sustainability is hosting a winter gear drive for the FreeStore. This includes coats, sweaters, gloves/mittens, scarves, boots, hats and earmuffs. This drive benefits students on campus who may not have access to adequate winter gear for the ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø cold season. Donations are being collected from Sept. 22 to Oct. 5.

Last week, Chancellor White hosted his 2024 convocation, which serves as a welcome back to our students, faculty and staff at the ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø. In his remarks, he mentioned several initiatives such as the Troth Yeddha' Indigenous Studies Center, a new arena to support UAF hockey and the ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø community, and UAF's efforts to achieve designation as an R1 research university. Friday Focus: UAF is vibrant - and that is no accident!

Over the past couple of weeks, many people have told me that the campus feels more vibrant than they can remember. We have all been seeing this, but when I walked into Arctic Java around lunchtime on Tuesday, it was downright packed! I don't recall the last time I saw so many gathered in our central oasis of coffee and snacks. It is great to feel the surge of energy that accompanies the start of a new academic year, and it is great that our classrooms and buildings are teeming with the voices, footsteps, and laughter of students returning to UAF. Fall is in the air and we are back! This is the time when our campus truly comes to life, and it is easy to be reminded of the purpose behind everything we do: building opportunities for our students to explore and thrive.
